OBJECTIVE.

Rikkyo University has opened a “Tokyo Halal Deli & Café” at its Ikebukuro Campus as part of its efforts to promote internationalization and diversification.

Rikkyo has promoted internationalization ever since it was selected for the Top Global University Project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014. The university has seen an increase in students from Indonesia and other Muslim nations in recent years, leading it to establish a Prayer Room at the Ikebukuro Campus for such students and to make halal food items available at its stores. The opening of the restaurant, which follows the opening of the first one at the Niiza Campus in September 2020, is another step in this direction.

Tokyo Halal & Café offers naan cooked with a tandoor (oven) and curry, in addition to vegetable-based menu items.

In operating the new restaurant, the university is taking sufficient countermeasures against infection by ventilating the air inside the restaurant, maintaining distance between tables, thoroughly disinfecting the premises and placing an acrylic board on each table.

  • The restaurant can help provide global food items and eliminate barriers involving foods because it can provide halal and vegan meals at a time when the number of international students is expected to increase, thanks to the introduction of the NEXUS/PEACE programs* in the 2022 academic year.
*The programs are part of a new system to accept international students that will start in September 2022.
