and state-of-the-art data analysis technologies

Features

Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence and Science

Cultivating abilities to connect artificial intelligence technology with society

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technological innovation central to the fourth industrial revolution. We are now entering an era where AI technologies are rapidly being applied and spread to society as a whole, such as in the field of autonomous driving. It can be said that AI has now passed a critical point in its evolution, as the world enters the era of big data and witnesses rapid advances in neural network-based deep learning. These developments have greatly contributed to the progress of AI, whose impact on economic activities will quickly expand and broaden. The advance of AI research, accelerated by intensive investment by the U.S. and Chinese tech companies, is projected to revolutionize the social foundations of the human race.

Rikkyo University opened the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence and Science at its Ikebukuro Campus in April 2020 to offer a new horizon for the future of the Japanese academic world and society in general. The graduate school aims to pursue research, education and practical applications of technologies on an integrated basis.

The graduate school covers the domains of the natural sciences and humanities/social sciences. By harnessing artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art data analysis technologies, the school is committed to generating new knowledge. Its mission is to gain deeper understanding about AI itself, which in turn will lead to clearer insights into human intelligence. Rikkyo’s founding spirit is “Pro Deo Et Patria,” which the university takes to mean “to seek universal truth and act for the world, society and neighbors.” Based on this educational principle, the graduate school pursues its mission of actively helping realize a society where anyone can lead a comfortable and vigorous life through unprecedented methods made possible by artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art data analysis technologies.

Programs

  • Graduate Program in Artificial Intelligence and Science

Helping solve various social issues with power of artificial intelligence and data science

This program’s mission is to help solve social issues by promoting research into applied artificial intelligence and data science capable of analyzing big data. The program offers education and research that emphasize practical social applications.

    Overview
Full-fledged learning of machine learning/deep learning
Students intensively learn artificial intelligence, data science and deep learning centering on machine learning to conduct advanced research. Their studies focus on basic subjects such as statistics that are essential in gaining knowledge of machine learning and data science. The program also includes a subject group, an essential element in gauging AI’s practical social applications, such as ethics on advanced scientific technology. This enables students to conduct a wide range of studies, from basic research to practical applications, in a balanced way.

Innovative research and human resource development by combining liberal arts, AI
The graduate school aims to foster human resources who can help solve various social issues by developing broad perspectives and the ability to connect AI with society. Students will acquire the ability to perform well in many fields while studying a wide range of subjects. For example, they can acquire not only specialized knowledge on natural sciences such as physics and life science, but also technologies such as data analysis with AI tools. This will enable them to analyze data from various fields.

Excellent practical application programs provided through industry-government-academia collaboration
The program provides an environment in which research, education and practical applications are integrated in order to foster human resources capable of connecting AI technologies with society. In learning about practical applications, students are provided with opportunities to receive practical instructions on advanced AI projects from faculty members who are on the frontline of such projects at private companies. It is thus possible for them to facilitate learning through joint research with partner companies and others, and acquire practical abilities for the benefit of society.

Offering day and night classes to make it easy for workers to learn
Classes are offered mainly on Saturdays and on weekday evenings to enable people with jobs to acquire a degree. The graduate school provides an environment where students with science or humanities/social sciences backgrounds and working students from various specialized areas can stimulate each other, creating a synergistic effect with students from different fields.

    Artificial intelligence and ethics
In using AI, sufficient consideration must be paid to the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI). The graduate school places priority on ELSI involving AI and has faculty members who specialize in AI ethics. In the master’s program, AI ELSI is a mandatory subject.
