On May 14, College of Science will hold a public lecture, "Designing and developing the world's first anti-influenza drug". The lecturer will be Professor Mark von Itzstein.

Professor Mark von Itzstein is a director of Griffith University’s Institute for Glycomics, located in the Gold Coast, Australia. Based on the research on the synthesis of sialic acid derivatives, he succeeded in designing and developing the world's first anti-influenza drug Relenza® (Zanamivir). By using techniques based on glycochemistry and glycobiology, he is actively engaged in development of novel drugs against viruses including parainfluenza viruses, which have been untreated with existing clinical therapeutic agents.
