The following program is open for short-term international students accepted through partner institutions or foreign governments. Direct applications from individual students are not accepted.
Classes are typically held once a week for 90 minutes, but some classes do meet twice weekly.
Japanese classes for Special International Students are part of the General Curriculum. Starting from April 2010, the University will offer nine levels of Japanese courses ranging from beginner (J0) to advanced (J8). These classes meet exclusively in Ikebukuro Campus.
The student’s level is assessed through the Japanese language placement test given at orientation. Special International Students who would like to take Japanese language classes must take this test.
This is a course on various research themes conducted through individual instruction in cases when it is deemed necessary by supervising professors. Students receive one credit for each semester.
The following courses are offered in English for primarily undergraduate students, but graduate students may be enrolled in them as well. In order to be enrolled in these classes, you need to have the minimum required level of English proficiency. If you do not meet the requirements below, please talk to the lecturer during the first class.

Practice of oral translation from English to Japanese, Japanese to English in a seminar style class with use of the language laboratory.

General Curriculum courses as well as the courses at the Colleges and Graduate Schools are offered for international and regular students. However, the University sets the limit on the number of Special International Students to be admitted in some courses. In addition,some academic courses are not open to Special International Students.
Moreover, in order to take classes conducted in Japanese, international students must score J6 (advanced level) or higher in Rikkyo University’s placement test, or score Level 1 or higher in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. (Depending on the field of study, some courses may prefer J7 or higher, or Level 1 in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.)
