Message from the President

In 1874, Rikkyo University, one of the oldest privateuniversities in Japan, was established in Tokyo. Ourtradition is academic freedom, and we welcomestudents and researchers from all backgrounds andwith diverse views. Since our founding, we haveemphasized liberal arts education and a globalperspective, educating the whole student to help themdevelop the skills and talents to contribute to society.Upon graduating from Rikkyo, students will be readyto shoulder a sense of shared responsibility as activemembers of society of their generation like our alumniwho are active leaders in their chosen fields and aredutifully serving their respective communitiesthroughout Japan and overseas. I am confident thatfuture graduates from Rikkyo will continue thistradition of serving the common good and make aneverlasting mark on a global scale.

Rikkyo University is highly regarded in the field ofresearch, and many of our faculty members areacclaimed researchers who sit on the boards ofacademic societies and associations. The universityoften hosts major academic conferences and congressesas well as international symposia that attractparticipants from all over Japan and around the globe.In addition, a wide range of workshops and lecturesare often held on our campus, with many open to thegeneral public.Today, Rikkyo University has exchange agreementswith many universities in the Asia-Pacific region,Europe, North and South America. We believe thatdiversity leads to global enrichment andunderstanding. For that reason, the purpose ofinternational exchange at Rikkyo is to attain a deeperunderstanding of the other, with full respect fordiversity, in order to grow the self. Rikkyo has beenselected as a Top Global University Project, and we willbe adding even more opportunities for studying abroadand overseas training course.

Rikkyo University students can take part in a numberof programs that provide many different types ofexperiences. Rikkyo has a long tradition of volunteeractivities. We offer students access to popular andwell-organized extracurricular activities, such as sportsand cultural events, as well as extensive forestry andagriculture workshops, in addition to several othersocial groups and programs.

Rikkyo University offers many gateways to stepthrough, and each leads to a world based upon its ownunique characteristics. With 141 years of tradition, Iassure you that Rikkyo University will continue tostrive for further enrichment of our academic andresearch programs, along with the active promotion ofinternational exchanges, to maintain the opennessbefitting our well-known title: Jiyu no Gakufu, or anAcademy of Freedom.
